Northwest Coalition for Responsible Investment
Cost of Cotton:
Uzbekistan’s place as the world’s second largest exporter of cotton comes at a great cost to its children. Each fall the government closes the schools and the children are sent out into the fields to harvest the cotton. NWCRI is a member of a coalition led by As You Sow that is addressing this situation by
- calling upon the Government of Uzbekistan to acknowledge this problem, and to work with the International Labor Organization (ILO)
- asking companies not to use cotton from Uzbekistan. Companies that have responded: Gap, Levi Strauss, Target, Walt Disney and Wal-Mart.
Take Action: Read White Gold: The True Cost of Cotton. Call upon companies to develop a labeling system that guarantees neither child nor forced labor is used in the production of cotton.
